Shakespeare is one of my top subjects! I have taught Shakespeare in grades 7-12 and on the university level. I was awarded a scholarship where I studied Shakespeare in London for 3 weeks.

I have taught for 12 years in both a private and public school in Greenville, SC. I am currently teaching at Anderson University but in the classroom and on-line. In grades 7-12 I have taught English literature and writing as well as drama courses. At Anderson University I teach English 101, 102, and 205.
Student centered instruction is the approach I use in my instruction. That means that the student's needs and learning style direct the way the information will be delivered and activities that will guide the learning. Students learn best by doing, so I only lecture for small amounts of time.

Education, teaching in particular, gives individuals the opportunity to give back what they have received. It is communication on a broader level than just simply putting forth information to whomever chooses to accept it. I started my career in education before I set foot on a college campus, through a peer-tutoring program in my high school. This experience allowed me to work with severely disabled peers learning functional skills for independence. Since then I have worked as an aide in emotional/behavior and multiple-disability middle school classrooms, as well as LD-resource, ED self contained and SC occupational diploma program. In addition I have earned a degree of distinction with the National Forensic League, been name a scholar-athlete in South Carolina and a host of other accolades in scholarship. I have experienced both urban and suburban school settings and have had inc ... read more

Wildly Experienced Writing and All-Around English Tutor

I have tutored writing at the college level since 1985 when I finished a formal course in tutoring methods. Since then, I have tutored writing and other subjects for people as young as 12 through college-age. For 15 years, I also taught college writing courses including basic writing, English composition, research composition, creative writing, and advanced poetry writing. I am the recipient of a Nation/Discovery award for poetry, and my poems have appeared in many literary magazines and some anthologies. I recently put out a novel. Additionally, I scored 198 out of 200 on the literature Praxis examination, which is a national teacher certification exam. In addition to teaching writing, I ran an interdisciplinary learning center for 11 years. There, I hired, trained and supervised tutors in many disciplines--usually at least 90 per semester. A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching and am passionate about literature and art. I believe that all children have the ability to learn, and it's a teacher's responsibility to engage each student in the subject matter. I am patient, organized, and caring. My goal is to provide a constructive learning environment and have fun with the subject matter. I was motivated at an early age by an inspiring teacher to do my very best at my schoolwork. She had the ability to encourage her students through fun learning activities and confidence building. I aim to channel that memory and truly make a difference in my students' lives. I believe that there are never weaknesses in students, just challenges.
As a graduate of a prestigious University, I was challenged to get into the competitive program and motivated to earn a bachelors degree in the field of Graphic Design. I have always had a passion for art and literat ... read more

I believe that students learn in different ways, and it is our job as educators to help enrich them for the future. When given the proper instructions and guidance I firmly believe that any child can succeed if just one person believes in them. I believe in all of my students, and do my best to help them reach their goals.
I have earned two bachelor degrees, one in Information Systems and Business Processes and the other in Communications and Media. A Little Bit About Me...

I will tailor my teaching to the individual student. One thing I've learned in my education program is that some kids learn visually while others learn auditorily, and so on. I believe in critical thinking; that is one skill that is lacking in school and in society generally. The task of the teacher, ultimately, is to get their student to that point, where he or she is challenging his or her mental models or basic assumptions concerning reality, with the tools the teacher has given the student.
I've been teaching informally most of my adult life. I earned a 193 out of a possible 200 on a Praxis test that covered content knowledge of my subject area (English literature), and 179 in a comprehensive middle school language arts test, and am enrolled in Capella University, where I'm currently pursuing a master's of science degree in K-12 studies. Teaching has been my passion for a long ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I recently finished my BS in English Literature at Towson University in Maryland. In the years I spent at Towson, I built a portfolio to include samples of my writing. I am interested in helping others build their writing skills to communicate creatively and effectively.
I enjoy helping students build on their strengths and overcome weaknesses in writing. I believe the key to a stimulating composition stems from the interest the writer has in the subject. Equally important is technical aspect of writing. Using a subject of interest to apply the rules of writing is the best way to shake writer's block and increase a student's comfort in English composition.

A Little Bit About Me...

I feel that I am very much a hands-on learner, but I also enjoy engaging the minds of those that I educate. I enjoy researching new and more relevant ways to teach the applicable generation under my watch. Also, I feel that learning occurs outside of the classroom/main learning environment, and that as a mentor/teacher, I am able to pass on various types of lessons. My current place of study models this truth for me; by opening up their lives to their students. This shows them that life is a series of lessons; one that must be taken just as seriously. When engaged in a teaching opportunity, I attempt to be pleasant, passionate, and humorous. Above all, I desire those listening to enjoy the privilege it is to learn.
I've always known that I wanted to work with children and adolescents. Prior to college, I was chosen to enroll in a course that helps those desiring to work in educatio ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have a BA in Bible/English and 40 graduate hours in English education. Once my children were school aged I began teaching kindergarten. I was a substitute teacher for many years on the elementary and secondary levels. In 1997 I went back to work full-time as a special education teacher in a Christian school. I taught reading, English grammar and composition (grades 3-11), study skills, English, American, and world literature, and one year of geography. I have been instructed in the Wilson method of teaching reading and find it really helps students who are dyslexic or having problems learning to read. I have also worked in an after-school tutoring program for kindergarten and first grade students.
I love working with students, and I especially enjoy helping students who are struggling with reading. It is very gratifying to see a reluctant reader master the necessary skills to suc ... read more
