Shakespeare is one of my top subjects! I have taught Shakespeare in grades 7-12 and on the university level. I was awarded a scholarship where I studied Shakespeare in London for 3 weeks.

I have taught for 12 years in both a private and public school in Greenville, SC. I am currently teaching at Anderson University but in the classroom and on-line. In grades 7-12 I have taught English literature and writing as well as drama courses. At Anderson University I teach English 101, 102, and 205.
Student centered instruction is the approach I use in my instruction. That means that the student's needs and learning style direct the way the information will be delivered and activities that will guide the learning. Students learn best by doing, so I only lecture for small amounts of time.

A Little Bit About Me...

I completed my undergraduate degree in Dramatic Arts in 2011. I have directed several theatrical production and dramatic scenes. Additionally, I have worked 1 on 1 with many students on dramatic pieces and monologues for auditions and competitions. I also have served as a judge for several speech and drama competitions (including the National Forensic League). I currently teach Public Speaking on the college level.
For drama and public speaking, I prefer to be highly interactive and enable the student to discover and create his/her own art with knowledgeable guidance and lots of discussion and performance experimentation. I like to use a series of techniques and exercises to build confidence and creativity in the performer.

Education, teaching in particular, gives individuals the opportunity to give back what they have received. It is communication on a broader level than just simply putting forth information to whomever chooses to accept it. I started my career in education before I set foot on a college campus, through a peer-tutoring program in my high school. This experience allowed me to work with severely disabled peers learning functional skills for independence. Since then I have worked as an aide in emotional/behavior and multiple-disability middle school classrooms, as well as LD-resource, ED self contained and SC occupational diploma program. In addition I have earned a degree of distinction with the National Forensic League, been name a scholar-athlete in South Carolina and a host of other accolades in scholarship. I have experienced both urban and suburban school settings and have had inc ... read more

Relaxed but exacting.
I have tutored writing at the college level since 1985 when I finished a formal course in tutoring methods. Since then, I have tutored writing and other subjects for people as young as 12 through college-age. For 15 years, I also taught college writing courses including basic writing, English composition, research composition, creative writing, and advanced poetry writing. I am the recipient of a Nation/Discovery award for poetry, and my poems have appeared in many literary magazines and some anthologies. I recently put out a novel. Additionally, I scored 198 out of 200 on the literature Praxis examination, which is a national teacher certification exam. I have always been a very driven and accomplished student, so I feel that I should use my gift to teach others how to become great students. My goal is to work off of the strengths of the students I tutor and build their confidence so that they will have a greater desire to learn. I am an excellent listener. I am also quiet and patient. I think that the best tutors show the students how to do the work, then give them time to try it on their own. I teach students to be able to become independent learners. I also focus on positive reinforcement. I have worked with children with learning disabilities and children from low-income homes and have helped them achieve their academic and personal goals.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy helping students build on their strengths and overcome weaknesses in writing. I believe the key to a stimulating composition stems from the interest the writer has in the subject. Equally important is technical aspect of writing. Using a subject of interest to apply the rules of writing is the best way to shake writer's block and increase a student's comfort in English composition.
I recently finished my BS in English Literature at Towson University in Maryland. In the years I spent at Towson, I built a portfolio to include samples of my writing. I am interested in helping others build their writing skills to communicate creatively and effectively.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a lifelong learner and teacher and enjoy using this skill to help others learn and explore all facets of learning and thus enjoy the endless benefits. I can make acquiring knowledge and skills enjoyable by using innovative and novel techniques to strengthen existing aptitudes. I love teaching and am passionate about literature and art. I believe that all children have the ability to learn, and it's a teacher's responsibility to engage each student in the subject matter. I am patient, organized, and caring. My goal is to provide a constructive learning environment and have fun with the subject matter. I was motivated at an early age by an inspiring teacher to do my very best at my schoolwork. She had the ability to encourage her students through fun learning activities and confidence building. I aim to channel that memory and truly make a difference in my students' lives. I believe that there are never weaknesses in students, just challenges.

More About This Tutor...

I will tailor my teaching to the individual student. One thing I've learned in my education program is that some kids learn visually while others learn auditorily, and so on. I believe in critical thinking; that is one skill that is lacking in school and in society generally. The task of the teacher, ultimately, is to get their student to that point, where he or she is challenging his or her mental models or basic assumptions concerning reality, with the tools the teacher has given the student.
I've been teaching informally most of my adult life. I earned a 193 out of a possible 200 on a Praxis test that covered content knowledge of my subject area (English literature), and 179 in a comprehensive middle school language arts test, and am enrolled in Capella University, where I'm currently pursuing a master's of science degree in K-12 studies. Teaching has been my passion for a long ... read more
