I have about 9 yrs. of experience in science research at the University. During that time, I have been responsible for teaching several graduate and undergraduate students. I have also been an adjunct professor at UNL and Nebraska Wesleyan. For the last 9 years I have been a math and science Mentor for Lincoln Public Schools. I have taught students from 1st to 10th grade math at LPS.

I graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education with a concentration in Mathematics. I spent a year as a Substitute Teacher in Lincoln, NE. I then took a year and a half break from teaching to recruit for a small college. I went back into teaching as a grade 7-12 mathematics teacher. I was responsible for the 7th grade through pre-calculus courses at Wheatland Public Schools in Madrid Nebraska. This school was then combined into Grant Public Schools. I am also a strong technical trainer in my current role and provide necessary computer and analytical training to all new associates at the current company I work for. I teach to the student. I find exactly what their strengths are and incorporate it in some way to learn something new. Education is a set of building blocks and can only be as strong as the foundation.

Every student has different needs and learns in a unique way, so it is important for me to teach in both visual and more concrete forms depending on the pupil. In my opinion, being a teacher is more about being a continual learner than it is about banking knowledge into the mind of a subject, and as a constructivist I look to build a lasting relationship with each of the people I tutor; I feel this approach is both more rewarding for myself as the teacher, but also more productive for the student as it is akin to my personal philosophy that a pupil "does not care what you know until they know that you care." I see teaching as a dialog between teacher and student and adjust the speed and depth of my teaching to best help the student succeed. Most importantly I want to the student to leave with a greater understanding of the subject than when they entered. I taught recitation for Honors Differential Equations, Differential Equations, Calculus 3, Calculus 2 and Introduction to Computer Science as an undergraduate at Georgia Tech and physics and astronomy labs as a graduate student at the University of Tennessee. I was consistently rated highly as a teacher by students.

I enjoy working with students of all ages. I strive to encourage students to develop a love for learning and the ability to learn independently. Each person has a different learning style so I like to allow students to take an active role in designing the method in which they will best learn the material. The best activities require students to take the initiative to meet the demands of the material, but allow them to collaborate with me to solve problems. I act as a consultant to the students, guiding and redirecting their focus and motivation when necessary, but permitting them to create an environment in which they can learn to appreciate the material and cultivate a stronger desire to learn.
