A Little Bit About Me...

As a high school and college student, I was very active in my community as a tutor, mentor, teacher, and coach. I have earned a bachelor degree, BS in Exercise and Sports Science. This degree and other core courses have given me an opportunity to learn and understand many areas including math, science, reading, and history (social studies). As a college graduate, I have worked closely with literacy and classroom teachers with reading and literacy programs. I also have been a program assistant for academic mentoring programs; therefore I understand the importance of individual assistance for each child.

Every child learns differently. In a world where we corporately streamline everything so that it all comes out pre-packaged and exactly the same we often lose sight of how unique each person is. I find that listening carefully to a child's reasons for having difficulty can help you to better understand how to help them learn. I find that children are often given too little credit - especially children with special needs. All children can be more than the world expects them to be. I just enjoy helping them realize that.

I really do place something of a premium on being able to connect with all of my students on an academic and personal level. I believe that this helps them as they know that their teacher and tutor cares about them and their future and, as such, this causes them to grow and excel. I can attest to such things happening with many of my students and for that I am incredibly thankful.
I have done a lot of teaching and tutoring, both with adults and young people. Most of my experience, though, comes from working with high school and junior high school students. I spent the majority of that time as a tutor/ mentor and would work with the students one on one or in small groups, both in the library or in the classroom. It was really the most wonderful experience and I was able to provide tremendous benefits to the students on both an academic and personal level.

I believe each student thrives when he or she is able to explore the writing process in a tutorial context, as a complement to the classroom setting, which cannot address individual problems as effectively. Many students, especially those having difficulty with composition, grammar and mechanics, need patience and encouragement from a tutor before their styles of learning emerge and they are able to identify and resolve obstacles to learning. Florida Writes is an assessment of writing proficiency which incorporates the assessment of higher order skills, since students are required to generate and develop the ideas that form the basis for their written responses. Looking for help? Select a tutor today. Beginning in 2010, each essay was scored by one rater. In previous years, two raters were used and the scores were averaged. Prior to 2010, a student could have received a half-point score, such as 4.5; whereas since 2010, no half-point scores are possible. Additionally, beginning in 2010, each student within the same grade level was required to write an essay using the same mode of writing (narrative, expository, or persuasive).
