I believe that the purpose of tutoring is to help students help themselves, or to assist or guide them to the point at which they become an independent learner. I know that the content knowledge is an essential ingredient for a tutor; however, to be truly effective, i believe a tutor must combine content knowledge with empathy, honesty and humor. In addition I demonstrate a caring attitude. Caring consists of being organized for the tutoring session, being punctual and gaining the students trust.
I studied post secondary in high school and graduated in the top ten of my class. I was on the deans list every year of my college career. Throughout my studies at a liberal arts College I gained a great diversity of knowledge and skills in many different subject areas. During my second year as a Religious Studies major, I began tutoring both native and ESL college students in Philosophy, theology, and a number of upper-level religious studies courses, many of which were writing-intensive. I am currently a graduate student working toward a Master's of Theology degree, and am working as a tutor for the on-campus Writing Center. Between my initial high school volunteering and my work as a writing tutor at my graduate school, I have experience will all kinds of tutoring, ranging from first grade reading to advanced degree thesis paper assistance.

Teaching needs to adjust with each student or class, because everyone has their own flavor for learning. I tend to let the student take the lead at first, and then I try to guide them through the areas they're questioning. It's like a car on a road with a new driver: the student is driving all over the road, and I need to gently urge them into the right lane (or the correct answer). I also like to use real world examples when I can from my past experience, and encourage the student to do so as well.
When I first started college, I had no idea what to major in. I started taking creative writing and literature classes though, and found my niche in English. I enjoy writing, reading, proofreading, checking grammar and punctuation, and find myself reviewing billboards and magazines for errors.
