Since 1991, I have been tutoring and teaching children in Florida, California and Costa Rica. In addition to being a tutor, I have worked with children in many capacities from after-school program coordinator to curriculum writer and summer camp counselor and instructor. I earned my BA degree from Florida A&M University in Visual Arts and History and my Master's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles in Dance Ethnography. Instructing my own ten year old daughter has also further enhanced my ability to work one-on-one with individual students. As a former U.S.Army academics instructor, I have taught several hundred students from many countries in South and Central America as well as Mexico. The academic program for these students was conducted exclusively in the Spanish language. I have received extensive education in technical terminology, lesson plan preparation, classroom conduct, and teaching aid operation. As a high school substitute teacher, I was able to implement my military experience into civilian use with a high degree of success. I am a native of Puerto Rico. I learned English as a second language at the age of 11 years old. I recall the difficulty I had in learning the English language while at the same time trying to make it through the 5th grade. My mother is a reading development teacher. She works with Title 1 children every day in her job. Before coming to college, I volunteered over 100 hours working with a Title 1 child on her reading, writing, and math skills. She was in the third grade for the second time that year, and by no means can I take credit for the fact that she went on to pass that year, but I do believe I helped her by understanding her difficulties, working with her as someone who was interested in seeing her succeed. As a teacher/tutor, I find that being a good listener and paying attention to students needs creates a successful learning environment. Every child acquires information differently and their ways of learning should be respected. By creating lessons based on exciting, "real world" applications, students are more accepting to the content at hand. I graduated from Florida State University in 2004 with a B.A. in Spanish and Italian with a minor in French. I have been tutoring with the Modern Language Department since 2001 and tutor in all three languages. I also spent a month in Spain teaching English to native Spanish speakers. As an undergraduate, I was involved with the America Reads program, where I was a reading coach/language arts tutor to elementary and middle school children.
