A Little Bit About Me...

I graduate May 2009 from Simmons College with a BS in Biochemistry. My courses taken during my undergraduate career were heavily focused in the sciences. I’ve taken upper level chemistry, physics, biology, and math courses. I tutored a student in zoology for a brief period of time. I was also a teaching assistant for Organic Chemistry I and II labs. I often met with students outside of lab to help clarify information and help answer questions on particular concepts and problems. I am furthering my own education by attending the University of Glasgow in the fall. There I will be studying veterinary medicine, which again is heavily focused in the sciences.

I am an enthusiastic teacher who loves to share my passion for chemistry. My greatest achievement as a professor has been bringing awe and excitement to the mundane: I will never forget the student who told me that she will never look at a boiling pot of the water the same way. I am patient and considerate but demanding of hard work and respect from my students. Students learn different ways, and given the opportunity and time, a teacher should try to find the best learning environment for their students. In a classroom, this can be difficult. I've been teaching since I was an 18-year-old Navy Hospital Corpsman in the 1970's. I tutored math, Biology and Chemistry during undergrad and med school and helped friends with the grammar for their research papers. I'm weary of dealing with managed care and am currently a little over than a year away from getting my Masters in Education.
I believe all children want to learn. Sometimes it takes some work to find the spark that ignites the learning process. Unfortunately, a larger classroom may not be the best environment to find that spark in some kids. I've been successful with both children and adults because I have a knack for finding out what motivates them. Once I know something about how a student thinks, I can better come up with concepts that will help her or him understand the subject.

I have a BA in Microbiology and an MA in Zoology. I have 7-8 years experience teaching biology, ecology, microbiology and environmental science at the college level. In addition I have many years experience in software engineering, technical writing, software quality assurance, and technical editing.
In the classroom I rely on traditional lecture, supplemented by Powerpoint presentations, animations, and lists and diagrams on the white board. I usually assign a research paper.
