PhD Physics, able to tutor in science, math, engineering

I was a senior scientist - engineer for 37 years. I retired to care for my comatose wife at home, and she died a few months later. This situation has left me open to new directions. My teaching experience has been 3 years as a graduate teaching assistant, and 2 years as a tutor to friends and family in science and mathematics. My goal is to show how math and science can enrich one's life and these subjects are nothing to fear.
I follow the method of G. Polya in his classic work "How to Solve It". By asking the right questions, one can help the student define his problem, form a plan for the solution, carry out the plan, and examine the result. I started by tutoring other students in trigonometry and calculus in high school. In college I continued to tutor other students in a variety of courses including general logic, chemistry, physics and English. I have an extensive background in physical sciences: BS in Chemistry, extended coursework in geology and a minor in physics. When my children started in school, I would go to their elementary school classes and teach basic physical science concepts. I determined class plans and did a series of activities with my son’s second grade class discussing molecules, states of matter, density and finishing with a discussion of geology. As a professional I have trained peers individually and in groups in a variety of subjects.

A Little Bit About Me...

I will work with the students and find where out where they are weakest. By doing so I will be able to give them the knowledge required to understand the material they are struggling with instead of teaching them how to solve the problem at that moment which will prevent them from struggling with mathematics their entire school career. I believe that with out understanding what is going on in the background the students will never fully understand what they are doing. Thus having worked with them to make their weak points their strong points they will gain the confidence needed to go into an exam and pass with a strong grade. I've taught in a Preschool classroom at my church for 1 year, and I've been a substitute teacher for the 2nd grade classroom at my church for 2 years. I've homeschooled two children for the past 11 years, and I've spent two years as a math instructor at a homeschool co-op. I've also worked as a tutor for Eastern Washington University's Computer Sciene Department for 2 years, and I've mentored several co-workers in software development over the past 28 years.
