Some need more encouragement that others, more supervision, while others do better with an overview explanation followed by "hand off" approach, allowing their creative minds to think of the solution. I like to use practical applications wherever possible. One time, I was working with an 11 year old on fractions. With her parent's permission, I asked her to my home to help me make chocolate chip cookies. I deliberately did not use the "easy" measuring spoons or cups - I used the ones that forced her to figure out how many of a certain fraction would equal one whole. Each child is different. I always try to notice and acknowledge what benefits each student, as I think this applies to all forms of teaching from academics to athletics. Getting on their level is what ultimately benefits the child from the get go and gains their interest. If I'm interested, then the child is interested.
