In my own experience, the key to learning has been to find a "critical link:" that is, to figure out an angle that makes sense to my brain. It is one thing to be exposed to a subject, and another to understand, remember and easily employ what is learned. When it comes to math I have found that most people who have trouble with math have simply missed some fundamental along the way. It is extremely rewarding to figure out what that is and fill in that hole. I teach by breaking problems down and asking easier questions that lead to the answer.
