A teacher never stops teaching, and never ceases learning.

I have to first find the learning style of the student. As a teacher, I find that students have diverse ways of learning and that I must adapt my teaching style to their needs. For instance, I have some students who are auditory learners and sometimes retain information more if information is read orally to them. Some students must have a generous amount of explanation as to the content of what he or she is reading while otheers require many visual cues to accompany their learning. It really depends upon the student.

Turning your weakness into your strength

I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is based on reading then reviewing. At that point in time ask questions to see if the student has grasped the information being given. If not, answer questions then clarify. When reviewing information it is important to make sure the student knows reasoning behind subject matter so that they are understanding logic and not just memorizing information. In subjects that invloves math such as probability, chemistry, or statistics, I would do a few examples followed by letting the tutee working a few problems.

A Little Bit About Me...

I truly believe that all children can learn with the right motivation. I have learned that it takes time to find the right strategy for some children, and not all children have the same strategy of learning. I enjoy working with children who others have given up on or can't seem to find the way to get to them. To me there is no greater joy than see the light in that child's eye, when someone has taken the time to help them get it...and they do get it. I love giving confidence back to a child who has lost it.

For example, I like to make sure that my student has an opportunity to learn a lesson not only hands-on but also visually. I am a strong believer in the saying that, “Practice Makes Perfect.”

A Little Bit About Me...

I tailor my teaching to each student’s needs. I have learned it is best to take my cues from the student’s personality and the resources they have available at home and school. The most significant elements I can provide for them are clear explanations of subject material, good rapport, and the ability to detect any present learning difficulties. My goals for each student I teach or tutor is to foster a conducive environment for learning in which the student is not afraid to attempt a problem and fail, they learn from their mistakes, and empower themselves to succeed.

Since my student teaching in college, I have been eager to help students not only improve their skills in reading and writing, but to recognize the joy of literature and power of the written word. I have taught grades 6, 8, and 9-12; courses including the IB program for high level students and Read 180 for low level students in the middle school; and, prepared students for End-of-Grade tests, End-of-Course tests, the writing test, and for SAT testing. I have taught or tutored students in preschool, middle school, high school, and college. I have 10 years of successful teaching experience in Charlotte. I am currently in a university position to help prepare students/teachers seeking initial or advanced licensure in education. I have a particularly in-depth understanding of the middle school child. Most of my tutoring experience took place during my college or early teaching years.
