My comments on tutoring Special Education : I have successfully tutored students that have autism, and dyslexia.

I give the students a skills assessment to identify which concepts they need assistance with. I help the students improve their grades at school by working with them on those concepts in addition to helping them with the concepts they are currently working on in school. I also provide help with homework and online classes. I provide one on one tutoring to the students according to their learning style. I can also tutor students that have special needs. I am patient, understanding, and dedicated to helping the students learn.

Special Needs Tutor: Specialties: Patience and experience

I am open as to how I instruct a child. Since my field of teaching has been that of Special Education, my students have always been allowed to develop their own learning style that is best for them. I do maintain order, but given the nature of my students, my classroom was not always what one would call typical. My students in the past have done well, and have gone on to secondary institutions. I am proud to say that I have taught students that have graduated from NCState, High Point, Catwaba, and Vocational Schools as well.

Helping children work through learning issues is my passion.

I have 22 years experience teaching public education k-6. I began my career as a special education teacher and then moved into regular education classrooms. I now tutor children from the Zoom platform since I cannot see them in my office due to the pandemic. I have been doing private tutoring for 2 years.
When working from my office, I like to use hands on activities that keep children engaged. However, since working online I use many different websites and materials that allow children to be actively engaged. I use Orton Gilligham and Wilson reading programs as well as my own materials. Helping children with learning issues is something I am very passionate about. Building self confidence is key to growing and learning.

A teacher never stops teaching, and never ceases learning.

I have to first find the learning style of the student. As a teacher, I find that students have diverse ways of learning and that I must adapt my teaching style to their needs. For instance, I have some students who are auditory learners and sometimes retain information more if information is read orally to them. Some students must have a generous amount of explanation as to the content of what he or she is reading while otheers require many visual cues to accompany their learning. It really depends upon the student.

Turning your weakness into your strength

I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.
I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. My paid professional teaching experince includes one year working as a Special Education Paraprofessional for 2-4 grade stundents classified with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders. My undergraduate degree from Valdosta State University was in music education.
While some teachers favor a direct instruction approach, I try to tailor my instruction to the growing and diverse needs of each student. Some are more auditory learners than others, therefore, for those you would need a lot of teaching by rote, i.e "do as I do", so to speak.

My teaching style is based on reading then reviewing. At that point in time ask questions to see if the student has grasped the information being given. If not, answer questions then clarify. When reviewing information it is important to make sure the student knows reasoning behind subject matter so that they are understanding logic and not just memorizing information. In subjects that invloves math such as probability, chemistry, or statistics, I would do a few examples followed by letting the tutee working a few problems.

A Little Bit About Me...

I truly believe that all children can learn with the right motivation. I have learned that it takes time to find the right strategy for some children, and not all children have the same strategy of learning. I enjoy working with children who others have given up on or can't seem to find the way to get to them. To me there is no greater joy than see the light in that child's eye, when someone has taken the time to help them get it...and they do get it. I love giving confidence back to a child who has lost it.

While studying at UNCC, composing papers on a variety of subjects enhanced my grammar and sentence structure. Being a Lead teacher at Dixon Academy, supplied me with experience in interacting with both children and their parents from diverse behavioral, cultural, and economic backgrounds. In addition, it was my goal to make sure that my students completed their homework before leaving the center. Helping my children achieve that goal allowed me to apply my knowledge in mathematics, English, art, and science.

I have a natural approach teaching style to second language learning. Based on Krashen's research students need to be in an environment that is comforable where they feel they can take risks. I also believe, based on Gardner's research, that students have multiple intelligences. Based on that information I create differentiated lessons which incorporate hands-on activitites, music, etc. We all have the innate ability to learn a language. Second language learning is finding a way to transfer our knowledge we already have in our first language to our second language.

I tailor my teaching to each student’s needs. I have learned it is best to take my cues from the student’s personality and the resources they have available at home and school. The most significant elements I can provide for them are clear explanations of subject material, good rapport, and the ability to detect any present learning difficulties. My goals for each student I teach or tutor is to foster a conducive environment for learning in which the student is not afraid to attempt a problem and fail, they learn from their mistakes, and empower themselves to succeed.
