Some people need to see the material, others need to write it out for themselves, and some need to hear the material in order to retain it. Teaching in small groups has the advantage that you can examine a student’s approach to their problems. Many students who needed tutors were falling behind because of misconceptions or poor approaches to science problems early on. When we could find the root of these problems it was often possible to bring the students back up to speed with the rest of the class in a short period of time.
