A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching and working with students of all ages. I particularly enjoy watching a student's eyes light up after catching on to something new. I know all students learn in different ways, but I believe most people learn best when they are relaxed and enjoying themselves. I also believe it is important, especially for math, tasks be completed multiple times for the ideas to really be remembered. A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching -- standing in front of a class of students, feeling the pressure of their attention and responsibility for their education -- but I think I enjoy tutoring more. Even when I was teaching a class of twenty-five college freshmen, I tried to move things in that direction, giving my students incentives to come by during my office hours (hard to do with such busy students). In the classroom, I made good use of the SMART boards (interactive computer displays), although I also enjoyed just talking to the students: I made the classroom a place that was relaxed and open to free discussion, but one which also had a purpose (basically, to learn to write). A Little Bit About Me...

As a student at Grinnell College, I was motivated to achieve at a high level. During my four years of college, I earned a BA in French and Biology. I also spent four months during my third year studying in France, where I lived with a host mother and attended classes at a local university. Currently, I am working toward earning my Master's Degree in Education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. I like starting with the given information and stepping through the processes to solve a problem. Reminding them of, or even showing them, the rules, properties, and examples in the book. I normally try to find the method that best works with each pupil, then highlight on that. I also make sure not to do the work for the student. I will sometimes come up with a similar problem to work through so they can see what's really going on within the problem.
I have tutored Algebra through Calculus I and Elementary Statistics for the last three years. 1.5 years at both Wichita State University and Washburn University. I'm currently working on a second Bachelors degree in mathematics, but this time with an emphasis in Actuarial Science. This mixes calculus, algebra, and statistics, along with some business classes, into one, keeping them fresh in my mind.
