ADD/ADHD is one of my top subjects!

Unorthodox is the best way to describe my teaching style. Unorthodox in that I will change my approach or activities based on student comprehension. Unorthodox in that I truly believe that for every student who is confused or doesn’t understand a concept, there is a teacher who didn’t do their job. My greatest strength lies in creating lessons and activities where students will want to engage. Engagement leads to a permanent investment. When a student is engaged by a lesson, they will remember that lesson. My comments on tutoring ADD/ADHD : 20 yrs. (my younger sister I helped throughout school, 4th grade - graduating from Nursing school. Both my sons age 7&8)

I would describe my teaching style as dynamic, creative student-centered
I've either taught or tutored in some form or fashion for over 17yrs now. I've had ages 3yrs to 22yrs old covering all manner of subjects and hobbies. One of my most rewarding experience was with an 18 year old special needs 10th grader ready to drop out of school. We met 2-3x a week for 6mths. In that time he raised his GPA from 1.2 to 2.7. He completed his 10th grade year and went on to take and pass the G.E.D. the following year.

Struggles with math or reading

My teaching style can fluctuate depending on the child and what needs to be accomplished. My goal is to build confidence in the student through small but very important accomplishments. I use a combination of technology and good ole pencil and paper to teach anything from math to reading.
Teaching children is something that brings me joy. Watching them make strides and connections in their learning makes me smile. I currently teach preschool to children with many different cognitive, behavioral, medical, sensory, and emotional needs. In the evenings and occasionally I get calls from my niece to help her via face time with her algebra. We have been doing this tutoring for 2 yrs.

My comments on tutoring ADD/ADHD : I have lived through raising an adult daughter who has ADD. I have lectured, to teachers and mentored parents to help their ADHD children to "level the playing field" by learning how to learn using their specific strengths and strategies to stay focused. Working closely with each child's teacher and school is the most important conduit to individual success in learning and life.

I have a hands on personal approach to learning. I believe many children get"lost"in the system and need individual skills and strategies to catch up and feel good about themselves as legitimate learners and doers."I can't" means "I won't" - attitude rather than ability and a fear of failure. Once a relationship of hope and increasing ability becomes apparent, most kids begin to care and thrive again. I use Montessori philosophy as well as some manipulatives with auditory and visual strategies to support concrete learning. I believe it is important to form a team around the child, including parents, teachers, and specialists where needed. Learning is fun.

I am patient and laid back. Not going to put kids/students on the spot. People cannot learn with out acceptance. I disapprove of a critical teacher. I have had my share. Learning is important to self esteem.
Nursing school taught me nursing math. Nursing math is converting quantities from one form of a unit to another unit, for example milliliters to liters. I had a fear of math but with enough practice we can all learn math. I have taken various college classes and now have 200 hours of college. I have been in education for 18 years. I started in special education and general education. I taught math, English, reading, science, and history. I also taught the GED and the state test (CA).
