My philosophy of teaching is to train the student to think like a scientist and/or mathematician. It is not just about getting the right answer but rather understanding the fundamental principals of a subject. This enables the student to try previously unseen problems and succeed. I have never been someone who "just gets it" when it comes to math or science, and so I understand more than many people who pursued degrees in these subjects just how puzzling they can be. Math seems like it is filled with "tricks" that seem impossible to know unless you were born with some innate gift. When I teach, I seek to show, step-by-step. how to think about a problem as more than a set of symbols on paper. I seek to impart the critical thinking skills that reveal why those tricks aren't tricks at all, but are instead a natural part of the grammar of math and science.

The number of years teaching and tutoring is a fuzzy area. I am a graduate student and I have been a teaching assistant for about 2 years, which consists of instructing laboratory, discussion hours and office hours. I have a BA in chemistry, which is certified by the American Chemical Society, so my study of chemistry covered all the major fields, including the laboratory, so I know applications of most of the theories that are taught. I first began tutoring in High School as I was in all accelerated classes. I was asked to tutor students struggling with their English skills (both writing and reading). I joined the on campus program for individuals looking to complete their graduation requirements. Through my assistance with the campus program, I was able to form a small base of personal clients. I enjoyed working with these students and watching them progress through into college.
I believe that it's important to understand how each student learns. Students who are visual, auditory or hands on need to be accommodated in order to achieve their full potential.
