A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from Ronald Reagan High School with a 4.6 GPA in the second graduating class ('08), then went on the NC State University to study Engineering, where I jumped in between various Engineering programs for three years before simply deciding to take a break and truly figure out what I want to study. While this may deter several people from choosing me, I know that if you met me and/or any of my teachers from any grade level, they/I could certainly set the record straight, as I am quite a smart person, I have simply struggled with getting my life into an appropriate schedule. Experienced math tutor.

It depends on the student and what they are doing. If all they need is practice, then I will let the student do all of the work, interjecting only to give advice or to correct a mistake if the student does not catch it themselves. If needed, I will work out similar problems. If the student needs help understanding, I first go in depth why it works and why you do what you do. I then give concrete examples to demonstrate it so that the why makes sense and comes together with the actual application. Then I have the student practice to make sure they truly understand. If needed, I will become creative and come up with different ways of looking at problems so that they can make sense. But no matter what I try to have fun. The best way to learn is to have fun, and if you aren't enjoying yourself you probably won't be receptive to learning.

I am a disciplinarian. I have an excellent ability to gain a students attention, keep it and the results of my students have been well above average. I have a knack to bring into the classroom, outside events (latest ball games, Olympics, etc.) to establish a 'bond' between myself and the student. This allows me to gain their confidence as well as not create a bored atmosphere. I find this very important, especially with the more difficult students.
As seen from above, I have valid tutoring experience in both middle grades and HS. I was in the student teaching program at Wake Forest and upon graduation, I was a substitute teacher in the Winston-Salem, Forsyth County School system. I also participated in the Junior Achievement program in the Piedmont NC region for over 5 years. I am currently a tutor with the "No Child Left Behind Program."

I received my undergraduate Bachelor's degree from Wake Forest in 2006 in Religion and Political Science. I worked at Sloan Academics for one year in Winston-Salem as a academic tutor for a 6th-grade girl in all subjects. In January of 2009 I started the Master's Education program at Salem College to gain both a license as well as a Master's to teach secondary Mathematics. I have taken several Math classes at Salem to be able to teach (Calculus I, II, and IV, Linear Algebra), as well as successfully tutored a Wake Forest student in Calculus I in the Fall of 2009. Also in the Fall of 2009 to the present I tutor a 6th-grade girl (different from Sloan) in Math. I hope to receive my license after the Spring 2010 semester.
