I worked for a dyslexia tutoring center, Road to Learning, located in the Chicago area that would tutor between 80 to 100 students per week. I was personally trained by Lisa Stankus who is the director of Road to Learning. I have also worked in a Middle School for 2 years to gain additional experience.
Northland Learning Solutions specializes in one-on-one dyslexia tutoring, in a warm, friendly atmosphere. Additionally, we have discovered that our program is beneficial to anyone requiring assistance in reading and spelling. Northland Learning Solutions offers professional tutoring services to the surrounding communities. Our Orton-Gillingham based tutoring system utilizes the Barton Reading and Spelling System. Teaching needs to adjust with each student or class, because everyone has their own flavor for learning. I tend to let the student take the lead at first, and then I try to guide them through the areas they're questioning. It's like a car on a road with a new driver: the student is driving all over the road, and I need to gently urge them into the right lane (or the correct answer). I also like to use real world examples when I can from my past experience, and encourage the student to do so as well.

If for example we are doing a unit on weather then my students may role play a weather man. Gather vocabulary from a newspaper. Count change as if they were really buying something. Read and write from a reporters perspective, or even travel to a museum with a reoprt and description of things they have seen using adjective and adverbs for color and detail.
