Motivated to help struggling students find love of learning

I love to teach and coach and think it is important to understand that everyone learns and grasps concepts in different ways. I do not have a specific teaching style other than positive because each child requires their own approach.
I have over 15 semesters of college courses most in the sciences. I find math and science to come easy to me if I am taught it in the right way and I would love to share that with struggling students out there. I have had experience in big and small schools, accelerated programs as well as normal classrooms so I have been exposed to a variety of learning environments.

One of the best compliments that a teacher/tutor can receive is to hear from a parent that their child loves to learn when he used to resent school. Obtaining my Bachelor of Science degree and Middle School endorsement from Faith Baptist Bible College has given me the ability to help others have a passion for learning. I have the most experience and expertise in reading, but also have experience in cognitive training as well as tutoring in composition, grammar, reading, math, and study skills.
I am a “hands-on” type of teacher who likes to get a lot of senses involved in order to enhance student learning. I generally do some initial direct instruction while explaining a new concept, and then I reinforce and assess understanding by doing group projects or activities. Because of my experience with cognitive training, I am also able to use strategies to help students who struggle with ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a Junior in college I made the decision to become a teacher. The decision was based on the observation that a majority of teachers are over worked and don't have the time to provide the individual attention some students require. I performed my student teaching at a small school called Central Heights. I taught Physical Education- grades K-8, Physical Education-Freshman Boys, and 3rd Grade-all subjects. I also performed in-class reading requirements in a 2nd Grade classroom. I have tutored on and off since graduation but due to my past employments have been unable to tutor in the last couple of years.
I believe that every person is able to learn, if they want to. You can't make someone learn if they have no interest in it. I try to establish a reason for learning with the student. My first child I tutored is a perfect example. This boy was 14 years old. He really enjoy ... read more

The core principle I hold to as an educator is that to be a great teacher I must also be a great student. A willingness to expand one’s knowledge and points of view by interaction with colleagues, students and the professional world which ones teaches about is the best way to insure that students respect you and the information that you give them. If students are taught by a malleable mind, then their minds, too, will be equally flexible. By understanding that all students possess multiple intelligences, and that those intelligences vary from student to student, teachers and tutors should guide instruction towards both the intelligences a student naturally possesses and those that need development. Another successful tool in motivating students is to make sure they know you are there for them beyond your time together and that you take an interest in their entire education.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a very passionate person who adores children and thinks that teaching is the most rewarding job in the world. I am dedicated, punctual, compassionate, patient, honest and fun. I would bring a positive aura that seems to follow me wherever I go. I will make the most educational experience possible for the students, while incorporating various learning styles to accommodate for each student's needs. For example; I will use hands on experience and discovery, visual aids, and collaborative learning to name a few. By using a variety of teaching styles, the chances of reaching out to each student and creating knowledge in which they understand increases. I will do my best to make the students feel like my classroom is a safe, fun, and stimulating place to come to everyday. I also work very well with others, and enjoy learning new things myself. I take pride in my hard work and believe tha ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I like working one-on-one with students, helping them to identify what they already know about a subject or topic and then logically building that up, step-by-step, into what they need to know. Finding a way to explain a concept in terms each individual can understand is the challenge. When students have difficulty in a class, it is often because the textbook doesn't speak to them and the teacher doesn't have time to explain it individually to each and every student. Additionally, many students simply need extra time for guided practice of a concept, time to ask questions and double check what they are doing, before they are comfortable doing it on their own in a classroom or test setting.
The majority of my teaching and tutoring experience has been in English and Math. During college, I worked in the on-campus tutoring center for 4 years, focusing primarily on Math. After gra ... read more

By far, the biggest issue I have found with students with difficulty learning mathematics or the sciences is that there is a lack of motivation to learn, primarily because they do not understand the implications of the knowledge in front of them. Because I have studied physics, mathematics, and completed the pre-medicine curriculum at my university, I am brimming with knowledge of these applications. Once my students have gained an understand of all the cool stuff we can do with knowledge in these avenues, they tend to absorb concepts much more readily. I have also found that my general excitement for the subjects I am teaching rubs off on my pupils.
Since my sophomore year of college, I have been tutoring students in mathematics, physics, and chemistry in both college and high school. I have also since been involved with biomechanical research at Des Moines University, where I cur ... read more

I truely consider myself a life long learner and hope to instill that in all the students I work with. I enjoy helping students become all that they can. I understand that each student has their own individual learning style and that the teaching has to be adapted for that. I believe hands on experiences are some of the best experiences and stay with students the most. I am a caring helpful person who has the best interest of my students at heart. I hope to help students see their own potential and use it to the best of their ability.
As a college graduate, I started my teaching career in a catholic elementary school. I taught second grade for a year and first grade for two years. It was truely rewarding to see students become fluent readers. I relocated and took a position as a special education assosciate. I worked with four special education teachers. My teaching philosophy mirrors my learning philosophy. I believe in using a variety of methods and media to reach students on a level they can understand. Knowing that not all students learn in the same way necessitates an understanding of individual facilitation as well as group facilitation. I believe in creating an environment that creates curiosity and engagement that will result in long-term learning outcomes. Like Freire, I subscribe to the idea that one must know the word in order to know the world; and one must know the world in order to create meaningful change (Freire, 1970).

As a young R.O.T.C cadet, I was very driven to excel in my college education. On my way to becoming a young Army Officer, I earned two bachelor degrees, BA in Communications and BA in Accoutning. My liberal arts educations granted me opportunities to learn and excel in many arenas such as writing, math, science, and the social sciences. I learned the art of effective communication, writing extensive essays and reports, as well as giving many speeches to audiences of various sizes. I also feel very confident in my ability to relay material to others as I was a student ambassador for my college, helped R.O.T.C cadets excel in the classroom, and tutored before and during college.
