A Little Bit About Me...

I believe the best way for someone to learn something is through application and repetition. As both a tutor and youth lacrosse coach I have had success by teaching my students how to approach problems rather than simply giving them answers. I am extremely patient and am very willing to take alternative approaches in helping a student learn.
During my undergraduate career at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, I obtained a wealth of knowledge in the fields of math and science. I did this by striving for excellence in the classroom and participating in cutting edge research with professors in the Entomology and Organic Chemistry departments. Early on in my career I spent 1 1/2 years as a substitute teacher in the areas of math and science, including several months as a long-term substitute in chemistry. For the last 20+ years I have been employed as a chemist/scientist/supervisor in both government and corporate settings. I first began tutoring under the direction of Nancy Donohue-Berthiaume at Quinsigamond College. I turored in Introductory Accounting, basic and college level mathematics. In my Sophmore symester, I was presented with a challenge. A young man who was both Dislexic, and Mathlexic was failing basic mathematics. In less then 1/2 hour, I was able to help him go from failing grades to straight A's. Later, I tutored fellow students in Pre-Calculus while taking the course myself. I ended up with a 4.0 GPA in that class. Later, I was provisionally certified to teach in 7th & 8th grade english and mathematics and in recent years I have felt more and more, because of my desire to help other's I would like to persue tutoring if possible.

I am easy going, energetic, very passionate (especially when teaching calculus and physics), and engaging. In most cases it takes only a few sessions and students are having fun. I believe that most students can understand mathematics with a proper explanation. For example, the order of operations is usually presented to students without explanation for its existence. This gives the false sense that it is an arbitrary rule. I enjoy sharing my understanding to students, but I also enjoy providing a role model for my students. If I show compassion to a students it is almost always reciprocated. Academic excellence is a virtue but so is being a kind and caring person. I like to spread this through my teaching style.
