Learning Can be Fun!

I like to allow the student to read the material once and clarity any areas that need more explanation. Then I will allow them to answer questions from the material read and help them where needed to choose the correct answer and understand the reason for the answers. I like to reward a certain level of correct answers with points that can be redeemed for interesting small prizes. I work with objectives outlined for each student based on their pre-test performance and measure their overall improvement on their post test performance. I use different techniques to instruct. One approach is to use visual objects to explain mathematical problems. i find using visual objects to work especially well with a problem like finding the surface area of a cylinder etc. I also let the students recite back to me what they have learned in each of our sessions and try to repeat certain topics that I believe they have not understood well.

From my own experiences as a student I have come to the opinion that the most valuable educational accomplishment one can achieve is to “learn how to learn”. This seems to be a state of mind, an epiphany if you will, which hopefully will be realized at some point in the course of an individual’s intellectual development. While earning my degree in physics at the University of Central Florida I found that tutoring was an excellent experience for both my students and me.
