I am a third year student studying for an Elementary Education degree through DmACC and Iowa State. I have just completed a year of Elementary Educator math courses. I have also have a degree in Practical Nursing and Limited Radiology Technology. I decided to go back to school to become an Elementary Teacher after being a nurse for several years and also ran a daycare out of my home when my kids were small. My comments on tutoring Writing : I love to write; whether it be an essay or a creative writing piece. I have never gotten below a "B" in college for my writing essays.

I have tutored adults for free when they have needed a good eye to evaluate their work. Many adults can not spell and have trouble building a basic sentence. I am good at proofreading and helping the thoughts to flow better. I ask a lot of questions in order to help the student understand the thought process.
I prefer the style of patience and hands on. No computers, no spell check. the only way to learn is to do it yourself.

I believe that every person is able to learn, if they want to. You can't make someone learn if they have no interest in it. I try to establish a reason for learning with the student. My first child I tutored is a perfect example. This boy was 14 years old. He really enjoyed carpentry. He hated math because he didn't realize that it would help him with what he loved. With the relation of math to his carpentry he was able to come from a low "D" to a low "B". It worked becasue he was able to mentally visualize and apply it to his carpentry. I feel the other key to his success is that we set the realistic goal of one letter grade of improvement. The extra letter was the icing on the cake.

Finding a way to explain a concept in terms each individual can understand is the challenge.
