I'm a strong believer in the Gardner's ideas of many different learning styles and types of intelligent. Some students are better audio, tactile, or visual learners. I feel it is the teacher's responsibility to find the best learning style for each student and build on that format through scaffolding. I love nothing better than to see the light bulb go off in a students mind. This also helps them to realize that learning can be a fun adventure. I've been a special education teacher and held positions in resource and in self-contained rooms. I've taught students with learning problems in reading, math, and writing. I'm a student at Augustana College whose academic record has ranged from public school to home schooling to community college and and even private education. I've worked as a tutor for over 2 years at Black Hawk College, at the same time obtaining an Associates Degree. Throughout those years I've encountered many special needs students and many bright students, tutoring in subjects ranging from English, Math, Social Studies, to Computer Science. I believe the best way to learn is peer-to-peer learning. As an auto-didact I have the study skills necessary to regurgitate information as taught by the current institutional models. I belive the key to teaching is Patience! Not everyone learns the same way so you cant always teach the same way. The best way to teach is to find the way that the individaul learns whether its through reading, seeing, or listening to the material. I like to try to provide many examples that they can relate to so that it will stick with them. I have a very strong background in writing. My experience includes my graduate research and thesis, news writing for a tv station, in addition to 6 years of writing for academia. I spent a semester in Pau, France and can tutor beginning to intermediate level students. I graduated with a 3.9 GPA in high school, college and graduate school. I don't believe in giving a student the answers to their questions. Rather, I think it is important to help them find the answers themselves--understanding the process will enable them to perform on their own.
