My early teaching and learning style was to do as many problems that were thrown at me in class or the text. I learned quickly that you need to understand the problem in order to solve problems that aren't set up for you. I obtained a strong liberal arts education where I was able to experience and learn about a wide range of academic topics. However, I have a strong focus and specialization in the sciences with a BA in both Biology and Chemistry with a Mathematics minor. Although I have never formally taught in a classroom on my own, I did assist in teaching a few of the classes I took during my first degree schoolwork while working toward my Bachelor Degree in Accounting. I assisted other classmates who didn't seem to catch on to the material as quickly as I did. Given that one of the subjects was government accounting, which is completely different from what we were used to learning, I embraced the challenge of helping others as well as bettering my own understanding of the material. Classroom discussions aren't very interesting if you've only got 1 or 2 people, out of 20, who know what you are talking about. Repetition is an excellent way to retain knowledge, which it was, and still is today.

When I am teaching I am very patient and try to organize the lesson or my assistance in steps. I'll have the child read the problem or question, ask what they know about it, see if they understand the question and proceed. The patient style helps me see what the student's strengths and weaknesses are so I know what they need to practice and focus on. If the child has multiple assignments or tasks I have them perform the more difficult ones first. Starting with the easy assignments may seem like it makes sense but I would prefer that the student have more energy for the tasks they'll have more difficulty with.
