Old Soldier who likes teaching English

I told my students there was no "wrong" way to present class material. They were told they would be videotaped & critiqued by their class members..BUT their presentation would be on their military specialty (eg. a Motor Pool SGT would do a class on vehicle maintenance)..thereby increasing the "comfort level" of the presenter & enhancing the knowledge of the class. The students would be taught to affirm each other & give each other positive "feed-back".
I taught for 9 yrs at the 1159 US Army Reserve Forces School. I helped soldiers get promoted to SSG, SFC, & MSG by providing them with skills in writing correspondence, public speaking, lesson planning & class preparation for delivery in both a classroom & tactical (field) environment. I also provided remedial training for soldiers needing additional work in writing,lesson planning & class presentation.

My comments on tutoring Creative Writing : I completed a concentration in Creative Writing while obtaining my undergraduate degree at Rochester Institute of Technology. I received all A's for my work in creative writing courses. I was awarded the Creative Writing Award at RIT for 2013.

When it comes to language, I believe that people tend to learn best by doing. I also believe wholeheartedly that successfully learning a language depends on your exposure to that language. Continuous exposure to any language can help language acquisition. For English, regardless of what specifically the student is struggling with, consistent reading and writing practice is key. With a manual language like ASL, practicing signing skills and receptive skills is invaluable. Finally, I believe that people learn better when their strengths are pointed out and highlighted rather than their weaknesses. Many students who struggle in school are caught in a perpetual cycle of perceived failures. Optimism, unwavering support, and excitement are key when working with any student.

I have done extensive research on various topics in Political Science and my experiences have taught time that there is never an end to learning, and there is no one single perfect answer to questions about natural or man-made phenomena.
Socratic, and lecture. It really depends on subjects. For example, case analysis in a political science or philosophy course can be more constructively learned through the Socratic method - that is, an open and inclusive discussion in the form of question and answer. Other subjects, such as psychology or geology may be best taught in the form of direct lectures with the opportunity to ask questions.
