My basic teaching style utilizes a multimedia approach since different students learn in different ways (audio, visual, or hands-on). I like using simple “demo” experiments to show the “magic” of chemistry. Demos are then backed up by showing the chemical equations to explain what is actually going on. I also tend to use a lot of analogies, that students can related to. I access web information to help explain chemical concepts in creative ways. I like to use visual learning methods as well as memorization and recognition methods. Seeing a diagram is sometimes not enough. Actually trying to simulate a diagram/problem on your own after seeing it once promotes better understanding. As pertaining to math, depending on the level of the learner, I would do some problems together first and then let them work through it and find out where they run into problems. I always write out the problems along with the learner. I believe that everyone has the potential to learn all subjects as long as they have the motivation and determination to learn. After graduating from the University of Oregon with a BS in Basic Mathematics and Integrated Science, I volunteered for the Peace Corps and found myself teaching math and science in a village school in The Gambia, West Africa. Upon my return from the Peace Corps I landed a teaching job at a Eugene Middle School and have taught 7th and 8th grade mathematics and science for the past 20 years there.
