The best teaching style in my opinion, explains how to research, plan and write essays, gives students time to practice these skills in class, and ensures students get feedback on how well they have done on each sub-skill. Students learn skills by using them in a realistic, subject-specific context, and in a combined way. So they might use other skills taught before such as note taking, highlighting, all in context. The purpose of the skills are stressed, students are taught not just what to do and how, but also why. The students then reflect on how well they used the skills, what gains they were getting and so on, and then they action plan for improvement.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am an experienced, certified teacher of Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, with teaching experience from elementary school through adult learners. I hold a Ph.D in Foreign Language Education and am a national-level demonstrator teacher for Mandarin Chinese pedagogy. I have a background in Linguistics and pedagogy as well as extensive personal experience learning languages (eleven at last count), so I have several different ways to explain any issue or difficulty that a student might be experiencing. I received a technology degree in 1975. Several years later I returned to college to persue a Physics/Mechanical Engineering Degree from SUNY New Paltz and RPI. I was an "A" student in Physics and enjoyed tutoring many classmates. I was a guest lecturer several times at RPI. Due to work and family commitments I did not complete the degree. My wife and I homeschooled our children through the primary grades. I taught sciences. While an Employee at IBM, I wrote and taight technical courses. I as ordained a Priest in 2004 but have twenty years of teaching from vocal/piano to languages. I am bilingual growing up with a father from Quebec,Canada and can easily tutor in French in both dialects. I can also tutor literature and reading. I love working with young people and see that as part of my ministry. And while my faith is extremely important to me, I am not looking to convert others. Growing up I dealt with dyslexia. I understand that each and every kid has a different learning style and not one style is better then the rest. I have always loved numbers and they are my passion. As a student at FMCC I was able to pursue my goal and assist others along the way.
