As an undergraduate psychology major at the University of Akron, I took advantage of a number of opportunities to help others. I have worked as a tutor at the University level, helping college students in the areas of intermediate algebra, college algebra, and Introduction to psychology. I have personally completed math courses up to Calculus III, but prefer tutoring the lower-level mathematics courses. In order to become a learning assistant (an undergraduate teacher’s assistant of sorts) I had to complete over fifty hours of training in tutorial and education related skills. I am a good listener and let the student tell me what problems they are having in any subject. I ask them questions to get them to think about what they're learning in depth. I let them explain things to me instead of just explain everything to them, this way I can find out what they already know and give them feedback so that they can improve on their weaknesses. It was in my senior year at UConn that I learned about a program called City Year that enables young people as myself to work within the realm of urban education. As a City Year corps member, I was able to work both inside the classroom and after school with a group of 22 ninth grade boys at Glenville High School in Cleveland. Not only was I able to do in-class tutoring with these adolescents, but I was also able to to mentor them by encouraging them to do the right thing. Being so close in age to my students, I was further able to bridge the communication gap between these boys and their teachers.
