During my collegiate years, I learned that experience was just as important as obtaining my degree. Therefore, I worked during my college years in a school offering mentoring for young children. For the last two years, I have worked for a young adult mentoring program called Project Respect. I work as a classroom facilitator. My BA in Communications offers me experience in writing research papers, essays, preparing and delivering speeches, and developing creative case studies. I would say that it is a little more toward laid back. Being over 6" tall, stocky, pushing hard, being an ogre, hard-nosed, that isn't going to work for me. People have a tendency to be a bit intimidated and fearful because of my size. I will use it to my advantage if it is necessary, or becomes necessary, but I've found being a little more quiet, reserved and coaxing the student to initiate the discussion is a little better. Ask leading questions, adjust and proceed, based on their response.
I have received degrees in Int'l Business from Lourdes College, as well an Associates Degree in Accounting from Owens Community College. Curiosity is an important aspect of both teaching and learning. Curiosity tends to accompany a willingness to learn. It also brings up questions, such as “Why?” or “How?” or “What does this mean for me?” As a tutor, I try to bring out a student’s curiosity by focusing on him or her as a person and by finding out what his or her goals and interests are. I aim to show students how reading and writing are necessary to accomplish those goals and interests.
