Experience Summary
I have taught full time in public and Catholic schools for 10 years. I taught part time as substitute, long term (months to full semesters or more), tutoring for 16years. While in college I had numerous teaching and tutoring experiences. I participated in the Multicultural Program in college and the American Indian Project. I student taught a full semester on the Hopi/Navajo reservation. I have taught all grades and adults but specialize in K-3 in which I have the most experience. Because my husband and I also had a career in sailing, I taught in several different locations: Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina and Florida. For one position I created and implemented a drop out prevention program. In 2016-2017 I worked as a full time interventionist tutoring students who needed extra help to stay on level.
Teaching Style
In groups large or small I have always individualized instruction. I get to know each student's interests and abilities, then build on the abilities using the interests. I believe students learn better when they find activities interesting and fun. I have had students come up to me in a hall years later saying remember when we did ... I find or make games and activities so students can learn while enjoying. I also use patterns and any short cut tricks such as number patterns and phonics to make learning easier.
My Hobbies
In my life besides teaching, my husband and I traveled extensively. For years we lived on sailboats and chartered so it was a business and a hobby. I have also traveled through much of Europe, Australia, New Zealand and parts of South America, including the Amazon forest (with scientists). I have done presentations with objects from some of these which have interested and inspired students.
Other Comments
At this time I would like to tour online. When things become safer, hopefully in the next few months, I will be glad to meet with students in person.
