Experience Summary
I started out my teaching career as a reading specialist for struggling readers in grades 1 through 6. I am trained in a program called Next Steps, which was designed by educators at the University of Utah, for readers below grade level. All of the students that I tutored saw significant improvements in reading and writing by the end of the school year.
I then moved on to become a regular first grade teacher for two years. During this time, I was able to further hone my skills in making learning fun and engaging. I believe this is the key to helping students do well in school.
While I taught full time I had a part time job as a martial arts instructor for children aged 3 to 17, which eventually became my full-time career. Not only did I train students physically, but I trained them mentally. I taught my students about goal setting, never giving up, and how to believe in themselves.
As a former teacher and a martial arts instructor, I am uniquely equipped to help struggling students both academically and socially. Although a student may begin to get better grades in school, we often overlook the fact that struggling students may suffer from decreased self-esteem and maybe even peer bullying. My tutoring method takes all of that into account to provide you with a more well-rounded and holistic experience.
Teaching Style
I make learning relavant to each specific student by getting to know their interests. I also teach using many different modalities as everyone learns differently.
