Experience Summary
Hello, my name is John Hett and I am passionate about teaching children and adults how to read. I am a "Highly Effective" Michigan certified teacher in the area of Learning Disabilities, Secondary English, and Secondary Social Studies. I prefer to work with students who are dyslexic or have a language processing problem. I currently teach high school English with a focus on writing. I have 22 years experience using the Orton-Gillingham Method. I use materials from the Wilson Reading System due to ease and cost. Parents must purchase these materials prior to instruction. I teach with 100% fluency in mind. My preferred time in after school two or three days per week. Teaching your child to read is a long commitment. The program can range from 18 to 24 months. This is not a tutoring class but rather reading instruction.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is very hands on. I employ a visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile (VAKT) method for remembering the rules of the English language. This method is described as "direct" or hands on and one-on-one. I only work with one student at a time.
My Hobbies
I am also a writer, musician, editor, and publisher of comic books.

The Wilson Reading System is a contained reading program that is very cost effective. I can order the materials at cost and you only pay for instructional time. I can provide references if you are interested. I travel to the student Monday-Thursday from the town of Plymouth, Michigan.
