Experience Summary
First teaching job was in a school for severely autistic children. After being there for a year I taught in a residential home for boys. This was challenging but probably one of my favorite jobs as a teacher. Because of the distance from home to work (about 1-1/2 hrs.), I applied at an urban school 20 minutes from my home. My first job there was managing the Young Parents Program. This was a program for high school girls who were pregnant or had already had a child. This program allowed the young girls to attend school. Due to budget restrictions it was cut. I was offered a position as a special education teacher in the high school. I have been doing that for the past 15 years. I taught American History, Geography, World History, Government, English, Reading, Reading Intervention and Wilson Reading. I retired this past June and moved from Connecticut to Asheville.
Teaching Style
My style of teaching really depends on the student and his/her learning style. Different students learn in different ways. I believe it is my responsibility to find which style works best for the student(s).
Other Comments
Have done a great deal of tutoring for students who were either expelled from school or that had tutoring as a requirement in their IEP.
