About Me

Experience Summary

I have been tutoring in one way or another for 30 years. My tutoring and teaching experience includes: 1) Teaching and tutoring statistics as a Ph.D. student at UNC-Chapel Hill 2) Being a Math Professor at Lafayette College 3) Teaching Actuarial classes for people intending on becoming Fellows of the Society of Actuaries 4) After earning my CFA Charter in 2000, I taught CFA classes and still do private tutoring for CFA candidates. 5) Numerous students for standardized tests including SAT's and GRE's. 6) Very broad based math and finance tutoring - I have recently been tutoring a Ph.D. student in a Stochastic Calculus for Finance class.

Teaching Style

There are three important things that seem very simple that I have learned about tutoring. a) Everyone is scared So much of learning is about dealing with these really harmful notions of self-doubt. I know a guy with a Nobel prize - really, a made in Sweden genuine Nobel prize and he claims that he wrestles with self-doubt when he learns something new. Sometimes my job as tutor is just to get rid of the self-doubt and assure you that you are making progress towards understanding. b)Most of the learning takes place in these short "Aha!" moments and they might be only seconds away. Teaching is really about facilitating learning. The key to good teaching is to find the obstacles, misunderstandings, irrelevancies, etc that are stopping you from the moment of clarity when the subject opens up and you say "That's it?". Sometimes people quit trying when they are literally a couple of seconds from that moment of clarity. c) The amount to be learned is never as great as might be supposed The more you study a field the smaller it becomes. I have taught intro stats so many times that I have inadvertently memorized Z-tables. But the total amount of what I know about Intro Stats seems very small to me because I just know these 10 canonical things that cover the whole course. I have had some really great success teaching the highly motivated about the canonical approach to tests, courses, skills like debate, and others. This is my teaching technique for people who want perfect scores on tests and want to win championships. It's tough but I have some students with some serious prizes from the process.

My Hobbies
