Experience Summary
My name is Tarek, I'm from Lebanon and I've been pursuing my doctoral degree in History & Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard since 2011 (with a projected graduation date of 2017/18). At Harvard, I've also been assisting professors in the teaching of Arabic since 2013, and have received certificates of distinction in teaching on four separate occasions. When I was at my MA program in Turkey (where I studied Ottoman History), I also assisted in teaching a general world history course intended for freshmen for three semesters
Teaching Style
I love using humor (often with a hint of sarcasm) in a classroom setting and I find it keeps everyone engaged. Though I certainly don't take myself seriously, I do take my work very seriously. Pedagogically, I like to combine more avant-garde approaches to education centered on self-education, where a student accomplishes as much as possible without actually needing a teacher, with a decidedly old-fashioned method of instruction when it comes to grammatical or general structural elements of language study.
