About Me

Experience Summary

Let's start out by saying I am definitely not your average tutor! Fun is vital to motivation, and I live on the stuff! I have been teaching for over fifteen years in a variety of environments, working in inclusive environments with children aged birth to twelve. I am now in my second year as a Special Education Teacher at a private school in DC that specializes in working with children who have Learning and Emotional Disabilities. I hold my M.Ed.HD in Special Education from GWU and a Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education. During the summer, I serve as the Behavior Intervention Specialist for Fairfax County Park Authority in Inclusion camps. Even in high school and college, I tutored peers and proofread papers. Currently, I tutor clients in Clinton, MD twice a week, and in Alexandria twice a week, so I m able to take on clients in/near those locations. In addition to tutoring, I am available to consult on your student's IEP or 504 Plan. I have a long history of nearly perfect test scores, exemplary grades in research and composition, and a willingness to research anything I may need more knowledge on in order to help you. If you are looking for someone who thinks outside the box and goes beyond worksheets and drills, then look no further. I believe the student drives the learning, and all lessons must be individually tailored to fit his or her needs... with a healthy dose of fun tossed in there!

Teaching Style

I love to incorporate art and sensory experiences into everything I do to really activate the brain. The "Drill and Kill" is very rarely appropriate, so I tailor every approach individually. What works for one student may not work with another. My formal training includes many intervention types and experience with multiple programs and curricula, so I have a large pool from which to draw...then we get creative! My style REALLY aims for those over-arching foundational skills like critical thinking, thought organization, and problem solving. I will also track and provide data to monitor progress and hold myself accountable for effectiveness.

My Hobbies

Reading, shopping, research, cooking, bargain hunting

Other Comments

Please feel free to contact me with ANY questions about my qualifications, philosophy, proficiency, or anything else you can think of. I love to talk shop!

Subject Commentary

Composition This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
As the child of a novelist, there was an extremely heavy emphasis on composition in my education.
Dyslexia Proficiency: Expert
I have had stellar success working with students with decoding disorders, though I do not follow a prescribed curriculum such as OG.
Language Arts This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
I am able to assist in almost all aspects of English Language Arts through college level (ex. reading comprehension, composition, grammar, research, etc.).
Math Proficiency: Expert
Through Middle School level
Praxis Exam Proficiency: Experienced
Well-versed in test prep, had nearly perfect scores on mine, and have had a few successful clients with the PRAXIS. A few more clients and I'll feel I've got the hours in to have accomplished "expert" level.
Psychology Proficiency: Expert
Psychology was my minor and has been a passion of mine since I was a teenager.
Science Proficiency: Experienced
Through Middle School level
Special Education This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
ADD/ADHD, EBD, LD, ID, ASD, SPD...every single child has different needs, but I am most passionate about working with students who have exceptional challenges and have a lot of experience in many areas.
Spelling Proficiency: Experienced
I would put "expert" as I loved placing in spelling bees throughout my years...however, my fingers cannot keep up with my brain and I make too many careless typo mistakes to claim the Expert title. But I love studying everything from letter patterns to morphology!
