Experience Summary
I have throughout my entire grade school career been both a tutor and a mentor. As young as in nine years old in fourth grade I was selected to tutor kindergarten children in mathematics. As I grew older, I continually tutored my peers in a multitude of subjects, math being the prominent and my best subject. In my junior year of high school, I was personally selected to mentor and tutor at risk middle school aged children at the partnered junior high. The program I was in was specifically for high school seniors who applied and made it, when one applicant dropped out, I was their first choice as a replacement because of my excellent grades, behavioral record and proven responsibility. As a mentor, I took on two vastly different twelve year olds and assist them in many things like homework, organization and study skills. More than that, however, I was a friend to them, someone they could trust aside from parents an teachers who would better be able to relate to them and teach them in a way they could truly understand. After such a positive experience I would like to have that again with another student, regardless of age. I like to think I am better qualified to teach young minds than those older with much more experience because of the fact I am so young. Children, whether they may be at risk or are have a hard time to open up to others or what have you, are easily defensive towards adults because they are already in that mindset that this is not only a strange person but a strange person of which I have no way of relating to or want to relate to. That is where someone as young as I, who is still an adult, comes in and changes that perspective right of the bat. I believe that myself along with other young people are easier to build lasting relationships with and better teachers to them since we were just in that very school system and know the material presented and are familiar with the teaching styles of most modern educators, which can prove to be beneficial to tutoring this in this day and age.
Teaching Style
My teach style is different for each pupil. Everyone learns differently and once I get a feel for how they learn easiest, I conform my teaching style accordingly, using personal interests and incentives if progress is made.
My Hobbies
I am currently a computer science major in college and lately have been learning new languages and have been trying to improve my coding skills. I also have been on this major health kick and attend the gym multiple times a week and occasionally go running on the Greenway if the weather permits it. In addition, I like to read, game, watch horrible movies and binge watch interesting tv series among other things.
