About Me

Experience Summary

As a caring counselor with passion for helping students reach their full potential academically and personally, I am writing to eagerly express my interest in tutoring. I feel confident that my training, enthusiasm, and experience working with students of various backgrounds makes me uniquely qualified to make a difference in the lives of your students. I am committed to helping students find success through comprehensive community programs and on-going counseling sessions and believe that every student, if given the proper guidance, can find a path to their own personal success. My sensitivity to and sincere interest in the well-being of college students has allowed me to make a genuine difference in many student’s lives. I have been regarded as a strong communicator and mentor, and I am confident that I can bring this same level of commitment and care to my students anywhere. My teaching experience is summarized below. Norfolk State University - Norfolk, VA 08/1987 - 05/2014 * Provided high quality undergraduate teaching. * Reviewed and updated program curriculum for accreditation. * Program Coordinator for Building Construction Technology. * Served as Faculty Senator 2013 – 2014. * Developed proposal which led to $150,000.00 National Science Foundation grant for the founding of Soil Mechanics Laboratory at Norfolk State University. TEACHING TECHNIQUES • Teaching and testing • Encourage student participation in classroom and laboratory activities • Emphasis on class attendance and good note taking. • Emphasis on students buying and reading textbooks and class notes. • Encourage students to ask questions at all times in the classroom. • Provide laboratory or field work whenever possible. • Use video presentation whenever possible. • Increase student passing rate by giving a minimum of our tests in each class per semester. • Solve all homework and test problems explaining each step in the process and why that step is necessary. • Provide office hours and encourage students to use them. • Encourage students to email questions at any time of day or night.

Teaching Style

Teaching and learning are complex processes. Teachers and learners are complex persons. No teaching philosophy exactly fits any one situation. Effective teaching involves making endless judgments and choices about what works best, and why. What is effective with one student or one group of students for one purpose may be ineffective for another student or group of students. I believe that anything that helps students learn is effective teaching. My philosophy of teaching is that all students can learn. My job is to find how best each student or each group of students can learn in each situation. My job also is to meet them where they are and to help them learn from where they are.
