Experience Summary
From 2002 through 2010 I served as an Adult leader for the BSA through which I taught subjects ranging from life skills (cooking, sewing, personal care, etc) to government (political structure, citizenship, etc.) to outdoor survival(fire making, edible plant recognition, swimming, etc.) Also, from 2004 through 2012, I served as a safety trainer and risk management trainer for two different employers. In January 2012, I decided to put my English Literature degree to use, so I began my studies to earn my TESOL certificate. In April 2012 I travelled to China to accept my first ESL teaching job for the Chengyang Primary/Middle School in Zhangjiagang, China. After a short term contract with this school, I turned down a renewal offer to move on to a school in Shanghai, where I lived. Shane English Schools placed me in a school in Shanghai where I have worked since July 2012. My current contract will expire August 2014.
Teaching Style
I extensively use music, video, flashcards and activities to make my clases fun and interesting. Discussion, and even newspaper articles can be supplemented as class materials. Classes are tailored to fit the needs and level of the student. I always keep my classes upbeat and moving forward. The proper amoount of review is mixed into the new material so everything remains fresh, not forgotten.

In my free time I enjoy reading, watching sci-fi movies, grilling, camping, fishing, bicycling among many other activities.

I have collected a large library of teaching materials over my years of teaching English and various other subjects. These include, but are not limited to, a full set of Dolch Sight Words flashcards and materials, hundreds of flashcards on many different subjects, and a large library of educational music and videos. |
English |
Proficiency: Experienced
|
English has been the subject I have taught for the last three years. As an ESL teacher, I not only have to theach all aspects of English, but I have to adapt my teaching methods to the lower understanding of my students. This makes my ability more finely tuned to the needs of my students. |
English ESOL |
This is one of my top subjects!
Proficiency: Experienced
|
This is the subject of preference for me. I am TESOL certified, and have been teaching as an ESL/EFL teacher for 3 years in schools in China, and for another accumulated 3 years online as a tutor. I find ESL/EFL teaching to be fun and rewarding. Using my degree in English Literature, TESOL certification, and a large library of teaching materials I can provide fun and interesting classes which make learning English easier. |
Reading |
Proficiency: Experienced
|
English has been the subject I have taught for the last three years. As an ESL teacher, I not only have to theach all aspects of English, but I have to adapt my teaching methods to the lower understanding of my students. Since I also have to teach reading to my students, I must teach such things as letter and word recognition. I must make the printed word as understandable as the spoken word. |
Spelling |
Proficiency: Experienced
|
English has been the subject I have taught for the last three years. As an ESL teacher, I not only have to theach all aspects of English, but I have to adapt my teaching methods to the lower understanding of my students. In an ESL experience as well as any other, I, not only must teach the spelling of words, but teach an understanding of why they are spelled as they are. I do this to instill a deeper understanding about the words the student is learning. |
Writing |
Proficiency: Experienced
|
In foreign countries, where I have worked as a teacher, many students have a different language, thus, a different writing system. My job is therefore twofold. First I must teach the students how to recognize written English and secondly, how to write in a totally new way. This is both difficult and rewarding for both the teacher and the student. |
