Subject Commentary

Dyslexia Proficiency: Expert
I have done course study and continue to do study with Dyslexia International. My expertise lies in the area of Reading and Writing. Consequently, I only tutor dyslexic students in those areas. There will be some spillover of techniques and gained abilities that will help the student in other areas, but I make no claim to being acceptably proficient in areas other than Reading and Writing. Please note that I will not tutor dyslexic student unless I have parent/guarding commitment to continue practicing with the student the principles I will teach them. I will leave you with ample instructions, information, resources and materials to continue their progress.
Elementary Grammar Proficiency: Expert
Grammar, correct grammar, is fundamental to writing which is one of my areas of expertise. I am very good at tutoring English grammar, from the fundamentals of subject, verb, object to diagramming complex sentences.
Elementary Phonics Proficiency: Expert
I tutor reading at all levels from K to College including tutoring dyslexic student. Phonics is so fundamental to the way neural pathways in the brain are formed for reading that I am always astonished when educators abandon it for something new, as they have done quite often in the last century. Invariably, they return to some modified form of phonics. In tutoring students in phonics, I take them through phonemic awareness and phonic awareness to learning phonics per se. It is a method that has never failed.
Elementary Reading Proficiency: Expert
Tutoring reading from pre-K and up is my area of expertise. I do it well. Your student will learn to read.
Elementary Vocabulary
Vocabulary is woven into the warp and woof of Reading and Writing, hence, it is one with my areas of expertise. Let's face it, rote memorization of vocabulary can be excruciatingly boring. I alleviate that as much as possible using a writing approach to vocabulary. I have students write something about things of interest to them and then we go on a treasure hunt for synonyms. It works.
Grammar Proficiency: Experienced
Grammar, way back when I was in Elementary and Secondary school was a required skill. Diagramming sentences into their constituent parts was considered as necessary to life as breathing. The courses I pursued in college and graduate school(philosophy and theology) were essay intensive. Accordingly, I am very experienced in English grammar and I have been quite successful in tutoring English grammar.
Reading This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
Nothing is more fundamental to learning than reading. The most profound lesson I learned in college was in second semester Honors English class when the professor commented that if he could get us to spend the same time in the library reading that we would spend in his class, we would learn more than he could ever teach us. I have been very successful in tutoring/teaching Reading to students from pre-K through college. I have had above average success helping dyslexic students. Note, however, that I will not tutor dyslexic students unless I have parent/guardian commitment to practice with the student the principles I teach them. (No, there is no extra charge for teaching parents/guardians the principles needed to continue advancing their student.
Writing This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
With a BA in Philosophy and a Masters degree in Theology, I have overabundant experience writing. Handwriting is matter of developing fine motor skills and practice. I teach the younger student fun exercises to develop fine motor skills and I provide templates to help them practice writing. My expertise in writing, however, is in sentence, paragraph and essay construction. I can tutor for MLA, APA, Turabian and Chicago styles.
