About Me

Experience Summary

In 2001, I received my certification in Elementary Education from CCSU. I then substitute taught for the town of West Hartford for 2 years while I got married and had my son. He had a lot of health problems so the decision was made for me to stay home with him. When it came to Kindergarten he still had many health issues so we thought it was best to keep him home and I began to Homeschool him. Homeschooling has worked well for him and his younger sisters so I have continued even though his health is far better. He is now entering 6th grade. My oldest daughter is 9 years old and beginning 6th grade math and 5th grade Language Arts. My 3 year old daughter is learning to read and my 16 month old daughter is along for the ride. Therefore, I am very experienced with expectations and skills needed to master K-6th grade. Through out the years at home with my kids I have been tutoring privately and at a center. Privately I have tutored adult ESL, Math SAT prep, reading, writing, and home work help. For 3 years I taught at the Total Academic Center in West Hartford. I taught mainly ESL Elementary students reading, writing, vocabulary and occasionally math. I also had an opportunity to teach a group of college students from Korea writing and conversational English. The academy was closed and moved last year. I am now enrolled in a class to be TEFL/TESOL certified.

Teaching Style

A student cannot learn unless he is comfortable and confident. My first priority before teaching is to make sure the student is relaxed and believes he can accomplish the goal. I also like to get to know my student to know what kind of learner he is and what he likes. My teaching style is "delight directed" whenever possible.

My Hobbies

I love to travel and learn about new cultures

Subject Commentary

Elementary This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
In 2001, I received my certification in Elementary Education from CCSU. I then substitute taught for the town of West Hartford for 2 years while I got married and had my son. He had a lot of health problems so the decision was made for me to stay home with him. Homeschooling has worked well for him and his younger sister so I have continued even though his health is far better. He is now entering 6th grade. Through out the years at home with my kids I have been tutoring mostly elementary students. Therefore, I am very experienced with expectations and skills needed to master K-6th grade.
Elementary Math This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
Math was always my strongest subject. Sadly many children struggle with math and the US places very low compared to the rest of the world in Math scores. I have studies the curriculum used in Singapore to understand why their students test so high. I can help your child master math.
Elementary Reading This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
In college I was part of a program that help struggling readers learn to read. I discovered that teaching a struggling reader how to read is the most rewarding aspect of teaching Elementary Education. So many learning possibilities are unlocked.
Elementary Vocabulary Proficiency: Experienced
I believe a focus on Latin roots is the most helpful.
English ESOL Proficiency: Experienced
I tutored ESL students for 3 years at an academy and privately. I am currently enrolled in a class to receive a TEFL/TESOL certification.
Homework Help Proficiency: Expert
I've been helping students with their homework since 1997. My experience is mainly with K-6 in all subjects.
Writing Skills Proficiency: Expert
During the last 3 years, I have mainly been tutoring ESL students in writing. I have experience in teaching creative writing, expository writing, and persuasive writing. Of course I would be fully capable of teaching a non-ESL student writing as well.
