Experience Summary
I have taught high school math for the past 4 years involving Algebra I and Algebra II ( at various levels) and Geometry and Pre-Calculus. I have worked as a tutor for the past 6 years in these subject areas as well. I have also worked with middle school students who were taking basic math or Pre-Algebra courses. I took a course at UNH to learn strategies and techniques involved with tutoring.
Teaching Style
When tutoring, I try to meet the students needs by utilizing methods of teaching which take into consideration the student's learning style. I explain concepts using visual representations as well as numerical/algebraic models. I am a very patient teacher who will find various ways of explaining math concepts, until I find one that works for the student. I teach students the "why" behind the process rather than explaining the process of finding a solution by only listing a number of steps, which the students easily forget. If the student knows why a process works, they will be able to recreate it again at a future date. I also demonstrate to the student various methods that they can employ to help them answer their own questions in determining whether or not a process will work in finding solutions.
I work with students in developing methods to help them better prepare for assessments and to deal with test anxiety which plagues many math students, affecting their ability to successfully demonstrate their knowledge on quizzes and tests.
My Hobbies
I enjoy spending time with my family and my dog. I enjoy reading and listening to music, and spending time outdoors, especially at the beach.
Other Comments
My students indicate that they enjoy working with me; that I make the math easier to comprehend. Many students and parents have indicated that I have built up the student's confidence in being able to be successful in finding math solutions. The students are no longer intimidated by going to math class.
