Experience Summary
I am a recent graduate of the University of Virginia with a B.S. degree in Chemistry-Biochemistry. Throughout my academic career, I have found myself in situations where I have had to help a fellow student in a particular math or science class. Since I have been a tutor, I have accumulated many hours and have received positive feedback from the students that I have helped. The students that I have tutored have thanked me for helping them grasp a subject that was seemingly out of their reach. In addition, they also have credited the teaching methods that I use
One teaching method that I find to be helpful is to use comparisons or analogies to the concept in question. Sometimes, allowing a student to think in a way that is "outside the box" is very effective in helping him or her understand an important aspect of a particular course. In addition, I also like to create application-based problems that allow the student to determine how well he or she comprehends a particular topic within a certain subject. Although many high schools and middle schools like to test students based on their ability to memorize, I firmly believe it is important to help the students that I tutor develop their skills in solving application-based questions because it will be important in college and beyond.
