Experience Summary
My name is Gabriella Runko. I have recently graduated from the University of Tampa in May 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Science and Biology. I have completed an internship with the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Clearwater, FL in 2011 where I worked with the hospitality department and sea turtle department. Through this internship I have given multiple presentations on various aspects of marine biology to teach the public about conservation methods. At the aquarium, I have also been involved in and watched various surgeries performed on marine organism and gained insight on the medical attention of marine animals. I have also completed an internship with Hammocks Beach State Park in Swansboro, NC in 2012 while working on sea turtle nesting and research on sea turtle migratory patterns. In the fall of 2012, I worked with Codagenix, Inc. in Stony Brook, NY. This laboratory focused on constructing viral vaccines. My job was to grow and sustain algae in the lab to observe biofuel production in these organisms. This past fall I also took the necessary tests to become qualified as a PADI Open Water Dive Instructor and an Emergency First Responder Instructor. The classes to become qualified as a SCUBA instructor have given me experience in teaching and breaking down what I know and what I have gained my degree in at a simpler level. I believe this is what inspires me to continue teaching biology. I plan to hopefully continue my education in marine science and deep water biology in graduate school this coming fall. I want to complete my doctorate in this line and field of work. After graduate schooling, I would like to become a biology or marine biology teacher for high school level students, and eventually a professor of marine science at a university.
