About Me

Experience Summary

During my sophomore year I started tutoring for the mathematics department, educating my peers in a wide variety of mathematical topics. This was a very enjoyable experience in which I took pride in my ability to instruct in mathematics such as calculus and statistics. During my junior year I started tutoring computer science on the side, which my students told me I was more proficient at than the college hired tutors. My senior year I was appointed a fellowship in the mathematics department during which I was in charge of the tutoring program. I also have a lot of experience playing the saxophone, mainly classical, but also in jazz. I have been playing as a part of an ensemble and as a soloist for about 13 years as well as having a degree in music. I have instructed for the purposes of contests, but I am eager to teach saxophonists of all ability levels and towards any performance purpose.

Teaching Style

I find that mathematics instruction is greatly improved by visual aid. I found that my most effective teaching tools were the white board and marker rather than the computer or calculator (although those are useful as well). I have also been able to adapt my teaching style to the learning styles of my students, whether they enjoy learning math or not. As for the saxophone, I believe that throughout a musicians instruction, a good balance between fundamentals such as scales and technical exercises, and repertoire such as solos and duets, is very important.
