Experience Summary
I love learning and teaching alike. My first teaching experience was in high school when I helped teach inner city children how to swim. Following high school, I earned a bachelor's degree in genetics at UC Berkeley, during which time I worked as a teacher's assistant for a genetics professor. While in medical school in Hungary, I tutored Hungarians in English, and medical students in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and biophysics. I completed internship and residency in Internal Medicine in the United States. As a senior resident I was responsible for teaching and supervising junior residents and interns. Although I currently work as a freelance science writer, my love of teaching has led me to continue tutoring (mainly math to middle and high school students) over the years.
Teaching Style
When tutoring, I strive to make lessons engaging, effective and enjoyable. Specifically, I tailor lessons according to an individual student's needs and involve students in a dialogue by asking questions that provoke thought, conversation, and perhaps humor. Because facts and figures are easily looked up in the information age, I place particular emphasis on thinking and on "learning how to learn". My teaching goals for any student are threefold: 1. learn the material (well!) 2. pass the test/subject (with a comfortable margin!), and 3. enjoy it (most challenging with math!).
