Experience Summary
I have real-world experience in the United States Army--both enlisted and officer. I have real-world experience in corporate America. I completed roughly 300 college credits, so I know how to succeed in school. I taught math for a year-and-a-half in public schools. As part of my teaching, I have spent countless hours tutoring after school.
Teaching Style
I prefer to be a facilitator. I believe in the "give a man a fish and you feed him for one day, teach the man how to fish and you feed for a lifetime." I can give you what you need to know; but I prefer to help you learn how to solve problems yourself. By giving you the tools to use what you know to solve problems, you can have the ability to figure out solutions to problems that haven't been seen before.
My Hobbies
Spending time with my daughter and my wife. Worshipping God on my guitar. Swimming to stay in shape.
Algebra |
Proficiency: Experienced
|
I have specific teaching experience with Algebra I. I believe Algebra I is the foundational course for all other mathematics. It is even used in Geometry. Because I was certified to teach Algebra I in the state of Virginia, I could have probably called myself an expert. Others (students and teachers)have said that I make math easy to understand. Still, I believe there is always more to learn, so I will just call myself "experienced," instead. There are many people who know math, and are incredibly smart, but have no (or very limited) ability to help others learn what they know. I'm not one of those. My strength is facilitating the learning of others. I am flexible and can come at topics different ways, because I only teach what I thoroughly understand. |

Math |
This is one of my top subjects!

I consider this to be elementary mathematics. I worked with elementary students last year that were gifted in math and the parents and students were extremely satisfied. However, most elementary students will benefit from having more manipulatives than I currently have. I want you to be extremely satisfied in the results your child achieves and math confidence your child develops. This may require some materials expenditures that we share. |
Pre-Algebra |
This is one of my top subjects!

This and Algebra I are my two strongest areas. I consider "pre-algebra" to be the same as the cumulative middle school course called "8th grade mathematics" as opposed to "math" which I would consider "elementary math." When I got certified to teach in Virginia, this was my focus! The reason: This is the foundation for all math that follows--including Algebra I. If you learn how to problem-solve and other basic skills that enable to you take what you know and apply it in situations that might look slightly or significantly different, it enables you to effectively problem solve as you continue to further your education. On the contrary, if you can't work with negative numbers or do basic mathematics life skills, you tend to struggle getting any more advanced concepts because you |
