About Me

Experience Summary

I have a B.A. in Speech and Communications and a Masters Degree in Speech and Language. I especially love working with special needs children with learning disabilities and language deficits. I have experience in assessment and therapy for Articulation, Language, Autism, and Dyslexia for children and adults. During my tenure with the Palm Beach School District I was able to assist many middle school students with special needs to complete their IEP goals and be mainstreamed to regular classes. My philosophy for working with young children is that learning strategies are most effective when they are interactive and fun. I have been trained to use auditory, visual, tactile/kinesthetic strategies as well as adult learning concepts. Prior to becoming a tutor with a major national organization, I was engaged in training professionals in technical writing skills and computers, including Microsoft Word, Publisher and PowerPoint. I also tutor phonics, grammar, public speaking, reading comprehension, written expression, study skills, the HESI, NLN, TEAS, SAT, ACT, ASVAB and other eligibility examinations.

Teaching Style

I believe that everyone can learn; that we are all life long learners and that patience and encouragement are key to a successful academic experience for all who seek to improve their skills. I further believe in focusing on the strengths of my students and individualizing materials and activities to meet the needs of the student.

My Hobbies

Sewing and arts and crafts.

Subject Commentary

ACT Proficiency: Expert
My tutoring program for ACT preparation includes all aspects of the exam--English, Math, Reading, Science, and the optional Writing portion--all of which are areas of expertise for me.
Composition Proficiency: Expert
See my description under writing
Elementary Study Skills Proficiency: Expert
Getting organized, prioritizing subject matter and developing a focused plan for study is foundational for academic success at every level. So regardless to whether I am teaching language arts, science, social studies or math the first thing I teach is getting a system that meets each students individual needs. Learning how to study is almost is equally as important as learning the material. Good study skills started early in the academic arena result in good study habits carried throughout life. After all, learning is a life long process.
English This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
Whether you are a native English speaker or you wish to learn English as a second language, I'm your go to expert. With a background in speech and language I bring a unique perspective to teaching the sound system, decoding, comprehension, grammar, vocabulary development, writing and accent refinement.
Entrance Exams Proficiency: Expert
I have been coaching students accomplish passing scores on entrance exams such as the SSAT, PSAT, SAT, ACT, NLN, TEAS,and HESI for many years. My students accomplish their goals whether they are taking the test for the first time or need to improve scores on a retake.
FCAT Proficiency: Expert
I have been teaching students the knowledge base for FCAT success from its inception in the school district where I reside. However, 2014 will be the last year for this test and frankly I'm glad because it hasn't been a true measure of our children's ability. Exit FCAT, Enter CCSS (Common Core State Standards). These are the skills our children should have been prepared for while they have been loosing ground being taught the FCAT test. I am well versed in the CCSS and prepared to carry your child to the next level in these new requirements.
Florida Writes Proficiency: Expert
Although I am well versed in this specific test and all of the skills that are assessed therein, this test will be phased out along with the FCAT in 2014. Its replacement has yet to be identified, but it will probably be designed to assess the requirements of the CCSS (Common Core State Standards) that are being fully implemented this school year in lieu of the Florida Sunshine Standards. See my description under Writing for a general picture of a tutoring plan for writing. All tutoring plans are individualized to meet the needs of the student.
Language Arts Proficiency: Expert
My language arts tutoring program includes grammar, reading comprehension and phonics, as well as introduction and practice with various genre.
PSAT Proficiency: Expert
We always administer a mock PSAT to determine where you are and then we teach critical reading skills; math problem-solving skills; writing skills and retest at intervals depending on the students individualized tutoring plan. This is the test to take if your child is going to college. It helps them prepare for the SAT in particular, but is also a helpful tool for doing well on the ACT. It also allows students to enter the competition for scholarships from NMSC (grade 11).
Reading Comprehension This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
I employ an unique perspective on teaching reading comprehension, which incorporates the foundations of reading with content area subject matter to enhance vocabulary development, verbal and written grammar usage and expose readers to a variety of genre to engage higher level analysis and writing skills.
Spelling Proficiency: Expert
Expertise in teaching spelling rules and exceptions
Writing Proficiency: Expert
From preschool or kindergarten to middle, high school and college level we teach students to form letters correctly to writing term papers, Master's theses and doctoral dissertations; not to mention working with those who are seeking careers in journalism. I've worked with published authors refining and editing their manuscripts. I also write several blogs and newsletters for faith based organizations along with experience in writing and revising technical, human resource and policy and procedure manuals.
