Experience Summary
As a returning adult college student, I have both classroom experience and life experience. My academic background in developmental and cognitive psychology as well as linguistics has helped me lead and tutor peers in small group sessions for hard to grasp topics and in pre-exam sessions for consolidation of the semesters material. I am currently employed as a UNCC tutor in biology and psychology. I have also been asked to return in the fall as a statistics supplemental instructor for statistics.
Teaching Style
My approach is multimodal as all students are different. The one consistent element is that of an active learning environment. Passive memorization and repetitive tasks are not part of my repertoire as both have usually been unsuccessfully attempted by those seeking tutoring. I request a lot of participation from the student. Development of critical thinking is also a fundamental part of the tutoring environment. This skill alone will help students through all academic courses (and life in general). Although my expectations are high, we begin by building a firm foundation of study skills and habits which work to make these expectations attainable. My background knowledge in human cognition has given me invaluable insight into how we encode, retain and recall information.
My Hobbies
Cooking, reading and currently attempting to learn Farsi! Although I spend a good portion of my time at the university, my dogs and husband are also on the top of my list of favorites.
Other Comments
Although I am available for emergency tutoring in some subjects, it is requested that students seek assistance in advance of test dates. This allows for consultation time and gives me a chance to familiarize myself with the student's current curriculum and teacher expectations.

Proficiency: Expert

My past courses have included Myth and Human Culture, Beauty in Western Culture, Linguistic Anthropology and Literature Based Research. My method of active reading has helped several peers become more efficient in their literature based courses. As for younger students, I have completed courses in child and adolescent psychology as well as human cognitive behaviors. I do not use a cookie cutter approach to teaching reading as science has proven these "systems" ineffective. If you are looking for an individualized approach to reading and to increasing the enjoyment of reading, I may be able to help. |
