Experience Summary
I have worked at the Salem State University writing center for the last two years. At the writing center, I work with students on papers in all subjects, from math to English. My experience at the center has helped me develop methods for helping students plan and organize papers, and also for addressing grammar and style issues. I also have a lot of experience working with ESL students.
Teaching Style
I consider myself a very laid back person and am flexible in terms of addressing the student's concerns. I primarily work in subjects related to writing. My training is in philosophy, so I tend to focus on helping students develop strong reasoning/arguing skills and a precise voice. I find that these skills, which are heavily emphasized in philosophical writing, carry over well into all forms of academic writing.
My Hobbies
I have played bass guitar for about 5 years now. During the summer I play around the North Shore area as part of an instrumental jazz/funk band called One More. When I am not playing music I spend as much time as possible with my beautiful three year old daughter Anna. I also love the outdoors and am passionate about protecting the environment. My interest in philosophy tends to spill over into my free time as well, and I enjoy reading and learning as much as I can.
Other Comments
I have a good track-record with standardized tests and would love to help tutor any prospective PSAT, SAT, ACT and even GRE test-takers. I tend to better in verbal and writing portions of these tests, but I feel capable of tutoring for the test as a whole as well.
My scores are as follows:
SAT: 2160 total: 740 V, 670 Q, 750 W
ACT: 31 composite: 34 Eng, 30 Math, 36 Reading, 25 Science, 11 (out of 12) Writing.
GRE: 167 V, 159 Q
